Unsurpassed beauty
has made Cape Town's breathtaking scenery
world-renowned. You need only drive a few
kilometres in any direction from the airport to
be rewarded with this visual feast. The roads
and freeways within Cape Town view the face of
Table Mountain while on the other side of the
mountain, cliffs give way to stretches of
brilliant white sand and endless coastline.
Driving southwards, past the University of Cape
Town, Bishopscourt and Kirstenbosch Botanical
Gardens, reveals lush valleys against towering
mountain backdrops. From the far southern end of
the Peninsula, where the backbone of the
mountains drops away to the sea at Cape Point,
it is easy to imagine that the next landfall is
thousands of kilometres away in Antarctica.
To the north-east of Cape Town, the N1 freeway
rises over the Tygerberg hills to reveal a grand
panorama of Table Bay with mountains and sea,
while from Tygerberg Nature Reserve the views
are equally superb. Sweeping views of the False
Bay coast can be seen from Sir Lowry's Pass and,
from the valley of Somerset West, the classic
proportions of the Helderberg mountain forms an
awesome backdrop to the many wine farms and golf
courses. The drive from Gordon's Bay past Kogel
Bay is equally rewarding.
Cape Town offers leisure activities to suit
everyone, from the super fit to the more sedate.
Reaching the top of Table Mountain offers a
choice: take the easy way up via the cableway,
or, if you're feeling somewhat more energetic,
one of the hundreds of pathways that lead to the
summit.
Those in search of adventure can go kloofing,
paragliding out in the blue from Lion's Head as
the sea breezes lift you high over the city
centre, or perhaps abseiling off Table Mountain
or over the edge of Chapman's Peak Drive.
Exploring the abundance of the Cape's fauna and
flora is a must, with many walks and climbs to
choose from: Lion's Head, Silvermine or
Tygerberg Nature Reserves, Tokai and Newlands
Forests, Koeberg Nature Reserve, the Cape of
Good Hope and Helderberg Nature Reserves, and
the Constantia Green Belt. Soak up the sun on
secluded Clifton Beach or palm-fringed Camps
Bay's white sands, or frolic in the warm waters
at Muizenberg and Gordon's Bay.
Why not stay a little longer in Cape Town and
enjoy a truly unforgettable holiday. From lofty
peaks and sandy beaches to rolling hills and
vineyards.
What could possibly be more magical ?
